About Us

SNOLAB is an international facility for world-class underground physics research and has an expanding programme in astroparticle physics and underground science. Located in an air-conditioned clean room 2 km underground in the Vale Creighton Mine near Sudbury Ontario, with a suite of surface facilities and laboratories, SNOLAB is currently preparing for the next generation of experiments.

The Position

The SNOLAB Staff Scientist (Scientific Staff 2) will support the laboratory and the experimental program at SNOLAB.  This will include supporting the laboratory in low-background counting, assays of the SNOLAB water system, and analytical services in the chemistry laboratories. The Staff Scientist will support Research Scientists in all phases of experimental work including dissemination of results in technical reports, journal articles, and conference presentations and proceedings.  Support for experiments will include scientific support including detector design, assembly, commissioning, operation, programming and analysis.



A Master’s degree in physics, engineering physics, chemistry, or a closely related discipline with 2 years of experience.


Experience with laboratory analytical instrumentation, high-vacuum systems and pumps, radiation detectors, nuclear electronics, and DAQ systems. 

Experience working in a research laboratory setting, and involved in the planning and execution of measurements and experiments.

Experience conducting data and statistical analysis using tools such as ROOT, Statistica or similar, and preparing reports and presentations.

Experience with GEANT4 or similar would be an asset.

Experience in experiment or equipment design and assembly would be an asset.

Salary Range

Salary will be determined by qualifications and experience and includes an attractive benefits package.  Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with SNOLAB policies.  This position is covered by the Collective Agreement between the SNOLAB Institute and the United Steelworkers Local 2020.  To meet operational needs, shift work may be required.
