About Us

SNOLAB is a unique world-class international facility for deep underground scientific research.  Located 2 km underground in the Vale Creighton mine, near Lively, Ontario, SNOLAB hosts a suite of surface facilities and laboratories including a 5000m2 clean room underground.  The science programme at SNOLAB is primarily focussed on subatomic and astroparticle physics, specifically the search for dark matter and neutrino studies.

The Position

This position will work primarily underground with some surface work. The Mechanical Maintainer will be responsible for tramming and forklift operation. They will also perform activities related to the movement of materials on and off site including handling supplies, nitrogen transfers, shipping and receiving.  The Mechanical Maintainer may perform activities in the installation, maintenance and repair of industrial machinery, air conditioning and laboratory equipment and in other repairs. The position will also assist with the cleanliness program. Tasks for the position will require lifting and physically demanding activities following general safety guidelines. May also be required to work in confined spaces, at elevated heights, in high temperatures, dusty or high noise environments following appropriate safety procedures.



Grade 12 Diploma required;

Minimum 2 years’ experience or equivalent required;

Post-secondary education in related field of study preferred.



Experience operating underground tramming equipment and forklifts;

Experience working with electronic shipping and receiving systems is an asset;

Experience erecting and installing scaffolding, hoisting equipment and rigging as per recognized standard practices is an asset; 

Experience implementing preventative maintenance programs for all conventional laboratory systems is an asset;

Experience troubleshooting, adjusting and performing minor equipment repairs;

Experience using hand and power tools.


Salary Range

Salary will be determined by qualifications and experience and includes an attractive benefits package.  This position is covered by the Collective Agreement between the SNOLAB and the United Steelworkers Local 2020. To meet operational needs, shift work may be required.
