Indeterminate Full-Time position 

About Us

SNOLAB is an international facility for world-class underground physics research and has an expanding programme in astroparticle physics and underground science. Located in an air-conditioned clean room 2 km underground in the Vale Creighton Mine near Sudbury Ontario, with a suite of surface facilities and laboratories, SNOLAB is currently preparing for the next generation of experiments focusing on neutrino studies and the search for galactic dark matter.

The Position

SNOLAB has an opening for a full-time Designer that will be responsible for design and drafting of mechanical equipment and systems. The successful candidate must be a graduate of a recognized 3-yr college program possessing a technologist diploma. Those with less education but combined with suitable and sufficient work experience will also be considered. The designer will be expected to provide expertise in mechanical design including bolted and welded assemblies of various materials. A strong proficiency in design in both 2D and 3D is required. The Engineering Office provides engineering services, including design, consulting and project management, to both the SNOLAB facility, and to the experimental collaborations for experiments hosted at SNOLAB.  The position will report to the Manager of the Engineering Office. The position includes, but is not limited to the following responsibilities:

  • Preparing models and drawings of mechanical, process systems including piping, pressure systems, and high vacuum devices and cryogenics;

  • Performing layout studies and draw schematic, orthographic, or angle views to depict functional relationships of components, assemblies, systems and machines;

  • Preparing electrical drawings and fabrication, assembly and installation drawings;

  • Preparing specifications and supplementary documentation including bills of material for the manufacturing of components and assemblies; shop instructions and installation instructions;

  • Design of mechanical equipment / systems that do not require a professional engineer;

  • Travel to and work within the SNOLAB underground facility as needed.



Completion of a 3 year post-secondary technologist program in an engineering or applied science technology discipline. Posses a C.E.T. designation or eligible would be an asset.


  • Experience in design and modelling using software such as AutoCAD suite and Inventor;

  • Experience in mechanical design and drafting including the preparation of detailed drawings for fabrication and assembly;

  • Experience in drafting standards and best practices including drawing control;

  • Experience with mechanical shop processes (eg. machining, welding, bending, forming);

  • Experience with various materials (eg. steel, aluminum, copper, lead, acrylic, PP, PE, PVC);

  • Experience working in the field at job sites gathering measurements and creating sketches.

Salary Range 

Salary will be determined by qualifications and experience and includes an attractive benefits package. This position is covered by the Collective Agreement between the SNOLAB Institute and the United Steelworkers Local 2020. To meet operational needs, shift work may be required.
