About Us

SNOLAB is an international facility for world-class underground physics research and has an expanding programme in astroparticle physics and underground science. Located in an air-conditioned clean room 2 km underground in the Vale Creighton Mine near Sudbury Ontario, with a suite of surface facilities and laboratories, SNOLAB is currently preparing for the next generation of experiments.

The Position

The Senior Environment, Health and Safety Officer is responsible for championing a systemic approach to managing and implementing a continuous improvement Health and Safety management system at SNOLAB. The role ensures that the management system meets all legislative requirements and is suitable to address the hazards presented by the SNOLAB facility and science programme including hazards presented by complex engineering and science systems. The Senior Environment, Health and Safety Officer proactively leads the strategic direction and goals for all health and safety needs and acts as the principle advisor to the Executive Director and other SNOLAB senior leaders. This will require the successful candidate to have significant working knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and regulations in a construction, industrial or mining setting. This also requires strong verbal and written communication skills, including the capacity to write reports and conduct presentations.



Bachelor’s degree in a related safety engineering, environmental health, scientific discipline or equivalent experience is required.

Extensive experience as a Health and Safety professional.

A health and safety designation is considered a strong asset.


Significant experience developing and implementing a EH&S management system.  This includes but is not limited to policies, procedures, processes, safety audits, hazard identification, assessment and controls, training and incident management.

Significant experience providing leadership and direction on emergency preparedness and response, industrial hygiene, fire protection,  accident prevention, and WSIB.

Experience in evaluating risks and hazards in complex engineering or science-based systems.

Experience developing and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and working in a collaborative, integrated manner.

Experience leading and managing a team including scheduling, hiring, training and managing performance.

Salary Range

Salary will be determined by qualifications and experience and includes an attractive benefits package. Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with SNOLAB policies. To meet operational needs, shift work may be required.
