SNOLAB Summer Outreach

SNOLAB Summer Outreach
The SNOLAB outreach team had the opportunity to bring hands-on science out of the lab and into the community at events around Sudbury this summer.

SNOLAB teamed up with local science and engineering organizations for an exciting event at Science North on August 1st. The event was celebrating the TVO series “When I Grow Up”, a kids show that explores different careers in STEM. We brought hands on science activities on magnetism, chemistry and light to over 200 young people during the event. Makela, the 13 year old host, explored the science demonstrations and was on hand for a Q&A with the attendees.

SNOLAB’s light and optics demonstrations were a hit at the Sudbury Farmers Market on July 28th and had visitors young and old exploring properties of refraction and reflection. Market goers explored the very similar index of refraction of vegetable oil and pyrex that seems to make the glassware disappear in the oil. A favorite was the total internal reflection demonstration that showed how light from a laser can follow the curved path of a stream of water from one container to the next. SNOLAB staff and scientists were on hand to explain the science and answer questions.

SNOLAB will be at the Sudbury Farmers Market, located at 233 Elgin St in Sudbury, again with science for the whole family on Saturday September 29th and Saturday October 27th.
